Label Design

Have you ever wondered how important the label design of a certain product is? Do you ever notice labels or are used to buying the many products you may need with other different criteria in mind? Even if this is the first time that you have heard such a question, I believe you deserve to hear the answer. Many people put their heads together to create these labels and they may think and draw for days before they find what they are really looking for. However, not all of us notice those labels and if we do look at them we do not really pay much attention to the way they were designed. Usually we buy the same kind of product for years because we know it is good quality and meets the needs of our family. What is inside the box is more important than its wrapping style, right?

Label design is no piece of cake, though. It is as important as the product itself. If label design is not attractive enough to make the customer look at the product, he or she has little chance to read the label and later test the product.

Label design is probably as important as quality and definitely the handiest way to connect the merchandise to the viewer and consequently to the potential buyer. If the label design is well conceived and attractive enough to be watched and studied, the viewer will later be tempted to try the product and may well, in the long run, become a fan of the line and, why not, spread the word around, among acquaintances and friends.

The name on the label is very important; it is the fame of the producer that guides us to a certain sector of the shop, but the label design may also be appealing for those who have not yet come across the brand and thus lure them into buying a certain product.

So, what should the label design be like in order to catch the eye of the viewer? Should it be on a gaudy background that strikes you at a glance? Or maybe it is enough to get a witty name in elegant graphics that match the season? The answer is somewhere in the middle. The label design can be very appealing without bright colors or intricate graphics involved. The most attractive labels are those which hide symbolic meanings, in stylish patterns and matching colors for the educated customer and probably joyful colors and funny graphics for the kids.

Label design should be created in accordance with the age range and the background of the customer. You cannot expect a kid or a teenager to be sensitive to the classic or avant-garde styles; nor can he be tempted to look at rather confusing designs, just as an artist will never stop by a product with a gaudy label on. Each customer type expects a certain kind of label design on the products they are after and according to that very label we can judge whether a product is appealing or not.

It takes time and a lot of inspiration to create the most appropriate kind of label design for a product. There is more than one designer involved in the process with most big companies. Each of them comes with an idea or two but the final label design is always the result of a long and winding road to the innermost subtleties of the message that the product is bound to transmit to the buyer. Design is a branch of art even when it involves just labels and price tags.
